Cauvery Delta Relief-2003
Following the drought and famine 2003, delta regions of Tamil Nadu were vigorously affected.. Mr. S. Balasubramanian, the then chairman of Vikatan along with Vasan Charitable Trust, initiated a new intervention ‘Therndhedungal Oru Gramathai (Select One Village)’ under which the Rice Distribution Scheme was introduced to support the farmers. Thus, it was decided to adopt villages affected in the Delta regions to support the hunger of Farmers. Narimanam Village of Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu was selected as the first village to extend our support. In the month of February 2003, 30kgs of rice bags worth Rs 8,00,000 were distributed to 400 families of Narimanam Village, which extended for next 6 months.
Further, with more incoming funds from our readers in India and overseas, 7 more phases was conducted by selecting villages in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Thiruvaroor District of Tamil Nadu. 30 kg Rice bags were distributed to more than 4000 farmer’s family each month for the following 6 months under the 8 phases.
