On December 30th 2011, Tamilnadu had an unwelcome visitor – Cyclone Thane. Declared as the strongest tropical cyclone of 2011 within the North Indian Ocean, Cyclone Thane wreaked havoc on the coastal areas of Tamilnadu. Thane’s wind speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour uprooted not just trees and homes but life itself.

The havoc wrought by the storm in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagappattinam and Puducherry, is estimated to be in the tune of Rs. 5000 crores. Experts say that it might take at least 20 years for normal life to resume as it had been before the onset of Thane. The need of the hour is providing support of every means to those affected by the cyclone.

Ever sensitive to the needs of the people, the Vikatan Group is poised with various initiatives to raise funds in support of those affected by the cyclone. As part of this drive, the Vikatan Group presents ‘Vikatan Thane Art Show & Sale’ at Lalit Kala Akademi, between March 5 and March 10, 2012.

Curated by Vasan Charitable Trust (the CSR arm of Vikatan Group), the Art Show strives to wipe the tears of those affected by the cyclone. It showcases the creativity of over 275 talented artists who have voluntarily contributed more than 325 finest paintings for the show. These paintings will be on display at Lalit Kala Akademi from the 5th of March. Proceeds from the Art Show will go towards a fund created especially to rebuild lives in the cyclone affected areas. .
